Zo hebben we sporen gevonden van verschillende boerenerven die dateren tussen 900 en 1200 na Chr. Dit was de tijd waarin het huidige dorp Groessen is ontstaan. Rondom de boerderijen vonden we resten van waterputten, greppels en kuilen. Met name \u00e9\u00e9n greppel was interessant omdat hier veel vondstmateriaal uit kwam. De oude Groessenaren hebben hierin niet alleen maar hun oude kookpotten weggegooid. We vonden er ook verschillende benen glissen, oftewel oude schaatsen.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Onder de middeleeuwse bewoningslaag hebben we een grafveld opgegraven uit de Merovingische tijd, dat is rond de 6e tot 7e eeuw na Chr. Dit grafveld bestond uit 48 graven, waarvan 46 crematiegraven en twee inhumatiegraven. Een deel van de crematiegraven was voorzien van een urn en in de graven lagen verschillende grafgiften, zoals mantelspelden, benen kammen of glazen kralen. Dit kan ons informatie geven over de personen die in het grafveld zijn bijgezet.<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<\/div><\/section><\/div><\/div><!--close column table wrapper. Daarbij zullen zij vast weleens een Merovingische urn zijn tegengekomen. Na 1200 is er op het terrein niet meer gewoond, maar het was wel in gebruik als landbouwgrond of tuin. Dit was voor ons een geluk, omdat de archeologische resten daardoor bijna niet verstoord waren.<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<\/div><\/section><\/div><\/div><!--close column table wrapper. Bij dit project is mij dat nu voor het eerst gebeurd. We hebben twee gouden munten gevonden die oorspronkelijk uit Frankrijk komen en uit de Merovingische tijd dateren. Maar het opgraven van een Merovingisch grafveld is sowieso al bijzonder. Een aantal urnen heeft de afgelopen 1500 jaar wonderwel doorstaan. De meest complete urn was ook gelijk een bijzonder exemplaar. Dit was een Angelsaksische \u2018buckelurn\u2019 die oorspronkelijk uit het Noord-Nederlandse kustgebied afkomstig is. Verder laten gouden munten uit Frankrijk en aardewerk uit het kustgebied zien dat Groessen verschillende internationale contacten onderhield.<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<\/div><\/section><\/div><\/div><!--close column table wrapper. Iedere week kwamen leden van de historische kring langs om de opgraving op film vast te leggen. Zo konden we de buurt regelmatig op de hoogte houden van de vorderingen en de vondsten. We zijn nu bezig met de uitwerking om te proberen deze informatie zo goed mogelijk uit te pluizen en te verwerken in een rapport.
