Het stadskasteel van Eindhoven was het middelpunt van de fortificaties. Van zowel de fortificaties als het stadskasteel was tot voor kort in het huidige straatbeeld niets meer aanwezig. Sinds een paar maanden staat er echter op de hoek van de Vestdijk met de Ten Hagestraat een replica van de hier in 1992 opgegraven kasteelmuur met waterput. Het is niet ver van deze plek dat we vorig jaar mazzel hadden. Bij het omleggen van kabels kwamen zware bakstenen muurfunderingen van een deel van het kasteel bloot te liggen. Bij nader onderzoek bleek het te gaan om delen van een ronde toren met een buitendiameter van 8.6 meter. Omdat er in de toren een opening aanwezig lijkt te zijn, gaat het waarschijnlijk om de toegangstoren naar het kasteel.<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<\/div><\/section><\/div><\/div><!--close column table wrapper. Een aangepunte en ingeheide, zware eikenhouten paal nabij de kruising met de Dommelstraat is mogelijk een restant van een brugfundering. Maar dat is nog onzeker, want op historische prenten en kaarten staat op deze plek geen waterovergang aangegeven. Nabij de Vestedatoren hebben we een cluster van wel 60 houten palen opgegraven. Een interpretatie van deze houten palen is nog onduidelijk. Wel lijkt het erop dat dit de resten zijn van een gracht die mogelijk rond 1583 aangelegd is, in de tijd dat de stad onder de het bewind viel van de Hertog van Parma.<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<\/div><\/section><\/div><\/div><!--close column table wrapper. Die bestond daar tot aan de Tweede Wereldoorlog. Het gaat om grote tonnen en een tiental grotere kisten. Daarin werden de huiden gelooid met gemalen eikenschors of run.
